There are few things worse than finding yourself awake in the middle of the night and being unable to fall back asleep.
Pleasant thoughts about plans for the future, birthday cake and beach vacation thoughts would be one thing. It’s another animal entirely to find yourself alone in the dark at 3 am with nothing to keep you company except for fear, guilt or shame.
The 9 of Swords is nicknamed ‘The Nightmare” card. Depicting a man alone in his bed, clearly distressed, with nothing but his very unpleasant thoughts. You can feel the agony, can’t you?
A common misconception with Tarot cards is that pulling an “undesirable card” means you need to be scared. Does this card mean something awful is about to happen to you? Absolutely not. It’s simply shown up to point out the fact that you may be involved in a similar nightmare yourself. One created by your mind.
The Sword cards in Tarot are the sharpest, most logical and realistic cards in the deck. The reason they seem to address scary themes is because our mind has a habit of taking us to the darkest of places and holding us there. It weaves stories about what could go wrong, it reminds us of who hurt us in the past, it compares us and it points out where we’re lacking and losing in life.

If so, this is a call to reality check with yourself. “Is my fear, guilt or shame valid? Is it true?” So often we dive down the rabbit hole and don’t even realize it and making a conscious effort to look at it “in the daylight” can really help shift your perspective. Things probably aren’t really as scary as they seem through the lens of your “night-time mind”.
Even if you find that there is indeed much cause for concern, take a few deep breaths and step out of the pain and into the space of breathing and your senses. Feel the air on your skin, notice the smell in the air, feel the pounding of your heart, listen for the sounds in the room. Even doing this simple exercise can give you some momentary freedom from the stress.
Just because our mind would like to carry us away in a bad dream, it doesn’t mean we have to go along with it.
