As I sit here writing this, I feel a deep agitation in my body. Little things have been going wrong for days. My daughter was whiny from an ear infection last week and I wasn’t able to get much work done so it’s piled into this week. I’ve had a massive headache hanging around that I can’t seem to make disappear and a skunk keeps spraying somewhere in our neighborhood; it's making me annoyed and nauseous. I’m also feeling argumentative (big surprise!). Welcome The 5 of Wands. This is a card of conflict and it will show up when nothing’s feeling quite right or very good. This card pops up when you're in the throes of self doubt, hammered with irritation or arguing with another person. Because this is a wands card, it refers to action oriented things, like bickering, fighting, impatience and that feeling of chomping at the bit and not being able to move forward.
This is the perfect card to describe the way I feel right now; fighting little battles and dealing with the unexpected skirmishes of life. How about you? What kinds of annoyances and frustrations are popping up in your life right now? How do you feel about them? Because that’s the point really. This card shows up to remind us that even when fires keep igniting around us that need putting out, how we handle the chaos makes all the difference.
Dealing with small irritations and grievances gives us a good opportunity to just be present with the distress. By being present, I mean letting it be there without giving yourself shit about it. If you’re annoyed, acknowledge that you’re annoyed. If you’re anxious, let yourself be anxious (without trying to change it). When you allow the emotions to flow through like they would in a river, they don't stick around as long and pull you down in a snowball effect of more of the same.
So, right now, close your eyes. What emotion do you notice is the strongest in your experience? Let it be there and see how that feels. Soon enough, it’ll be gone and you probably won’t even remember it.
