Some of us like to spend our time in the future, planning for things that need to get done, fantasizing about adventures or awfulizing (this is not a real word) and you know how that works right? You spend large amounts of time imagining and anticipating all the terrible details of the worst case scenario. This kind of thinking can make for some serious stress if you’re anticipating everything that needs to get done, excitement if you’re fantasies are amazing or fear if your anxiety gets the best of you.
Then there’s the other side of the coin: those of us like to spend our time replaying the past. We reminisce about past experiences, we romanticize our past lovers, we condemn those that did us wrong and we lament the things we did wrong. The flavor of the sentimentality depends on your current mood of course, but it’s an emotional road no matter which direction you’re headed.
The 6 of Cups shows up in a reading to symbolize exactly this. This card is about looking back at what once was. On the card, we see two children, one is giving and the other is receiving. The background is yellow, intoning a happy scene. The lilies symbolize innocence and this could easily be a brother and sister or very young love. Being a Cups card, we’re talking about emotions here. This card often points to the inclination to get emotional by looking back and idealizing. This is fine except when all that romancing of the past (or lamenting of the past) keeps you from relaxing into what life has to offer you in the here and now.
Where in your life are you ignoring the present, in favor of the past? Are you idealizing or lamenting?
The message here is to become aware of a susceptibility to letting your emotions run the show by dragging you into too many thoughts of “what was” or “what could have been”. Memories are beautiful and we often learn tons by reviewing the past, but getting stuck in them really does rob you of the pleasure of the dynamic, pulsing now.
