The Suite of Swords is about the mind. The mind is so very useful, but it can and will play us hard. Constant spinning, evaluating, searching, comprehending and fantastical ideas. Round and round our mind goes, often leaving us even more exhausted then physical activity. The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master, as they say.
The Suite of Swords is the air element and typically relates to challenges. Im sure I’m not the only one to roll my eyes when I pull a Sword card, suddenly fearing imminent strife (let me point out that this anticipation is simply another act of the mind)
Back to the man lying in repose. This is the 4 of Swords and there’s stillness in this card. There’s peace. There’s stained glass and hands steepled as if in prayer; this is a resting card. So where is the challenge in resting you ask? Well. How good are you at resting?
I have an “addiction to doing”. I come from a long line of women who go and go and go and go. We do what needs to be done. Laziness is unacceptable in my lineage and I caught the bug. In the old days (before I had the clarity to see that I was using busy-ness as a coping mechanism) I would go entire days without sitting down other than to drive or to pee. I still do it sometimes when I’m not paying attention. I always tend to have the longest “to-do” list when I’m in stress.
So what does that mean to you? Do you keep busy to numb yourself from your feelings? Chances are, you do. Whether it’s meeting with friends, exercising, going to work or cleaning the house, if you do these things compulsively, chances are you’re “addicted to doing” too.
So the card this week, is about making an intentional effort to slow down. Breathe. Everything is going to get done in perfect timing. You don’t have to make 20 dates with friends in order to be accepted. You don’t have to go to yoga if you're exhausted. You don’t have to sweep the damn floor in order to relax.
Resting is useful too. It relaxes our nervous systems, it lets us clear our minds and most of all, it helps us get to know ourselves on a deeper level. And resting is also a total challenge, so on the advice of the 4 of Swords, make that what you “do” this week.
