Oh, why hello there you handsome Knight.
What’s this? You brought me gifts of love, tenderness and passion? Oh my… those feel good. I want more.
The Knight of Cups rides in on his beautifully groomed white horse, wearing stylish clothes, and because of his intense brooding passionate looks, women fall in love with him easily. He’s emotional, he’s capable of expressing love, he’s the kind of man that sweeps us right off our feet because he’s adept at mirroring back at us, some of the deep yearnings that we feel within, but may be unable to express. This is the man that can bring us emotional fulfillment.
*Disclaimer: The knight is a man, but know that as I reference him, I’m really speaking about anyone, man or woman, that triggers those deep and somewhat dangerous feelings of passionate and romantic love.
Back to the Knight- this is a man that can also activate the shadow side of all of that juicy loveliness. We’re talking about emotions that are fickle, and change on a whim. He might be intensely enamored with you today, but by next Monday, could easily find you boring or irritating.
Captivation like this brings endorphins, passion, intensity, and the kind of liquid excitement that courses through our brains and bodies making us feel electric. But the high will likely be followed with a low that includes feelings of apathy, jealousy, neediness, melodrama and unrealistic expectations.
So, expect to get a chance to really work that spectrum because when the Knight shows up in a reading, he usually indicates a sense of self-deception that will ultimately lead to emotional discomfort.
First ask yourself: is the Knight of Cups a person in my life, or am I the Knight of Cups?
If the Knight is a person, be curious about any idealizations or delusions you may be experiencing about them. Are you expecting them to make you feel better and heal your pain? Isn’t that a lot to ask of someone else? Are you allowing them to rule some aspect of your life with moodiness instead of common sense?
If you’re the Knight in question, are you sending out mixed messages? Are you avoiding being honest because it’ll be unpleasant? Are you being duplicitous in any way?
Contemplating these questions can help paint you a clear picture around your feelings. Cups are, after all, the Suite of Water and Emotions, and when we’re not clear with what we’re feeling, our shadow gets activated and we operate on stories that may or may not be true.
The Knight signals that it’s time to take personal responsibility for our part in whatever we’re feeling, so that we can gain our power back.
