There are plenty of people that think Tarot is scary because of cards like this. The Devil card does seem frightening at first glance, but like most creepy things- it’s only like that on the surface. There’s so much information in this card, so much support available if you chose to see it that way. This is a Major Arcana card and so it applies to the big picture.
Pulling The Devil is an indication that “your monsters are up”. The voice in your head that weaves tales of destruction and shows you detailed versions of everything that could go wrong, is very active.
This card is ripe with symbolism, from the black background (darkness) to the goat horns (Capricorn, ruled by Saturn planet of limitations and boundaries) to the torch in hand (fires of hell, but also light to see) but what sticks out to me always with this one, has to do with the bottom half of the card. This card, has much the same imagery as The Lovers. It depicts a man and a woman and a figure above them. Like the Lovers, this card is a card of choices and perspective.
The man and woman are “imprisoned”, however look at the chains around their necks; they're loose, and can easily be slipped over their heads, making escape possible. They both have a necessary tool at their disposal, she food and he fire, both of which are the only two things they need to survive and thrive.
This card is about fear and what you choose to do with it. You can stay frozen and chained, looking around you at all of the scary monsters that show up in the darkness of your mind. You can do that. And sometimes you need to do that because imagining worst case scenarios is a way to prepare you; it can help you plan and it’s good to have strategy. BUT, stay in potential-disaster mindset for too long and you'll effectively create a cozy little living hell for yourself.
So where are you doing this in your own life? What situation or relationship are you spinning over and over and focusing on what’s shitty about it instead of what’s good? What would a change of perspective do for you? What if you just slipped out of those chains, grabbed your tools and your partner (and that partner can be a human partner, an animal partner or the very real and extremely supportive partner called your higher self) and walked straight up and out of that hellhole into more freedom? What would that look like? Because that’s the choice this card begs you to make. It shows you that you’re in hell and that you can easily get out.
So spend some time being honest about why hell is so appealing (and it must be in certain ways, otherwise you wouldn’t choose to stay there) and then spend some time being curious about what freedom would look and feel like instead. Compare and contrast. When you make your decision and decide to hit the road towards the light (which you will, because hell is a lot less appealing once you’ve shone the light of awareness into it) then have that conversation, step into your power, use your voice, switch your energy. You’re so much stronger than you give yourself credit for.
