In the Thesaurus, there are 36 synonyms for the word Judgment and all of them are positive words like discernment and awareness. I have to say, and I think I speak for most of us reading this- the very word judgment strikes terror in my heart. Admittedly I’ve lived my life in fear of the the opinions of others, and I still do. This fear has pushed me in directions I didn’t want to go in and pulled me from things I really wanted. As I’ve gotten older and I look at these tendencies to bypass judgment by people pleasing, the question that comes to mind is: Whose rules am I playing by anyway?
Judgement is obviously multi faceted and so with this card, you’ll have to use your intuition to discern which of those rock faces you find yourself on today and this week. This is a Major Arcana card which means that it applies to the bigger picture of your life (not the small day to day details).
Tarot card number Twenty leaves a lot to interpretation. Sometimes when I look at it, I think the angel looks angry and the people look like ghosts in pain begging for forgiveness from a cruel God. Other times I see a loving angel, making music for ecstatic people so that they may dance. That’s the thing about judgement; it can be something scary or something refreshing, on which side it falls, depends on your level of fear in that moment.
If you look around your life and the world, you’ll notice that the old rules apply less and less. Bodies like government and the church used to enjoy pretty tight control on things like morals and standards and therefore had the power to monitor “the people” to ensure good behavior. This isn’t as true these days, that kind of power is much more dilute than it’s ever been. There are too many of us with conflicting ideas about proper etiquette to come to a general consensus anymore and the world is changing so rapidly that the old rules don’t even make sense. So it’s important to discern exactly who thinks you’re doing it wrong up. Is it God? The government? Your parents? Society at large? Or is the judgement that hits you the hardest, that which comes from your inner critic? Explore that question this week.
Being criticized feels awful. The energetic flavor can make the strongest person feel bruised and battered. You may be aware of feeling particularly judged in your life. We tend to be most affected by judgement that mirrors our very own judgment of ourselves. So ask yourself- what are they judging me for? What am I judging myself for? Whose judgement is it anyway?
Judgement can mean condemnation but it can also mean something entirely different. If you use judgement to be discerning, the effect is very different. We have to make decisions. We have to weight options. Limbo and uncertainty can be comfortable, but in the end, the action happens when we make the decision. Do you need to make some decisions? As Mars continues to gain momentums, you will be pushed to move. You know where that push is directed at. Don’t make snap judgements though, get clear on what you want. How do you want to feel? Move in that direction.
Now lets talk about the idea of salvation. We all have secrets don't we? Pieces of ourselves that we keep hidden away. These secrets can eat us alive as we turn them around and around in our minds, envisioning the worst case scenarios, ruminating in fantasy. What would happen if you were to just come clean? Would it help release you from your own little version of hell? That’s what salvation is about isn’t it? Allowing ourselves to be seen; really seen, and yes, judged too, and then being loved and accepted through it all. So the challenge of this card for you may lie there, in that place. Where in your life are you in the closet? There’s salvation in the truth. On the other side of the fear of condemnation, is being loved despite your flaws.
So what does this card say to you this week? Your personal magic lies in that answer.
