How do you handle it when you just “don’t feel good?” Have you ever considered sitting with it and giving it your attention? It’s counterintuitive, I know. Pain brings up so many habitual responses that can include running from it, fighting it, ignoring it or distracting yourself from it. I hear you over there: “Oh hell no! Pain is pain- it hurts! What would make me want to just sit with it and not try to make it better?”
There’s an alchemy that happens when we acknowledge discomfort and allow it to be our companion instead of our enemy. Giving discomfort our attention can generate quite a bit of understanding about the origins of it. Understanding it helps it transform into something that's less like pain and more like wisdom, plus it teaches us about patience and there’s huge strength in patience. This is the message of the Temperance card.
I’m in the thick of a lot of emotion unease these days. There's a heaviness, a sense of impending doom. Maybe it’s astrological transits, maybe I’m feeling the stress in the collective, maybe I’m working through some of my own shadow aspects. Whatever it is, it’s been happening for so many months now that I’ve come to the conclusion that the only thing I can really do is let the uneasiness be there without having to change it. It’s taking a lot of self restraint to do this, and calm deliberation. But like the angel on the card, my intent is to swish my emotions, my physical ailments, my dread and my fear around until they become something else, something more empowering. The card itself gives insight into how to do this: the Iris reminds you of the necessary element of creativity, water shows you how to let things flow easily and the rising sun brings in the relief of a brand new day, a change in perspective.
Where in your life are you uncomfortable? What happens if you sit with the stress for a few moments at a time? What are some creative ways to move it around, turn it from one thing into another thing? Can you look at it from a new and fresh perspective? Temperance asks these things of you and and also reminds you of your strength.
